Lascia Ch'io Pianga (G.F. Handel)

from Not Yet There by Karl Sanden

/

about

An instrumental arrangement for solo accordion of G. F. Handel's soprano aria, Lascia Ch'io Pianga. George Frederic Handel originally composed the piece as an Asian dance for his 1705 opera, "Almira", but it is most well known as part of his 1711 opera, "Rinaldo". On the keys of the accordion it has become more of a stately impassioned speech, rather than the reserved and sensitive lament of the soprano.

lyrics

Original lyrics (Italian)

Lascia ch'io pianga
mia cruda sorte,
E che sospiri la libertà!
E che sospiri,
e che sospiri la libertà!
Lascia ch'io pianga
mia cruda sorte,
E che sospiri la libertà!

Il duolo infranga
queste ritorte
de miei martiri
sol per pietà,
de miei martiri
sol per pietà.

Lascia ch'io pianga
mia cruda sorte,
E che sospiri la libertà!
E che sospiri,
e che sospiri la libertà!
Lascia ch'io pianga
mia cruda sorte,
E che sospiri la libertà!

Translation (English)

Let me weep over
my cruel fate,
And that I long for freedom!
And that I long,
and that I long for freedom!
Let me weep over
my cruel fate,
And that I long for freedom!

The duel infringes
these images
of my sufferings
I pray for mercy.
for my sufferances.
I pray for mercy.

Let me weep over
my cruel fate,
And that I long for freedom!
And that I long,
and that I long for freedom!
Let me weep over
my cruel fate,
And that I long for freedom!

Karl now spends most of his time fixing broken things or with his family, and he rarely plays music. Once in a while, though, his accordion randomly pops up in unexpected places.
